United Nations celebrating the Youth Olympic Spirit in Singapore

In a joint statement published for the launch of the International Year of Youth, 27 Heads of UN entities – including Wilfried Lemke – stressed the “importance to recognize that leisure-time activities, sport, tourism and volunteerism can contribute to the physical, emotional, intellectual, ethical and cultural development of young people.” In particular, they acknowledged that “sport gives youth a healthy start and teaches important values such as discipline, cooperation and commitment,” adding that “a greater focus on sport can promote the development of important skills and that are key to the future of our youth.”
